The Fenwick Reserve Ecological Restoration Project – Te Matuku

The HGCT has held funds from DoC since 2021, through its Jobs for Nature fund, to enable Waiheke-based Forest Restoration to continue to remove pest plants and animals from this peninsula. This carries on the work started by the late Sir Rob Fenwick and his whanau. It is vital in their and the HGCT’s dream to see kiwi reintroduced to Waiheke and in particular to this peninsula on the southern side of the island adjacent to the Te Matuku Marine Reserve.

This project, in conjunction with the island-wide Te Korowai o Waiheke project to eliminate stoats and rats from the Island is helping to enable the reintroduction of kiwi birds translocated from nearby predator-free islands.
